SAR has proven technology for treating wastewater from land-based industry, as well as from the offshore oil and gas industry, ships and refineries.
SARs biological water treatment plant at Mongstad is Norway's largest facility for treating contaminated water. The facility has a concession for an annual treatment capacity of and discharge of 240,000 m³, in compliance with strict environmental requirements.
What makes the plant unique is its robust design and ability to handle a wide range and complex compositions of contaminated water.
The water treated comes mainly from the offshore industry and includes, among other things oil-contaminated water, ballast water, washing water, engine room slurry and water contaminated with heavy metals.
How does that work?
Best Available Technology (BAT) is implemented to ensure optimal process conditions and environmental protection.
Pretreatment of contaminated water is carried out chemically in a DAF plant (Dissolved Air Flotation), in which heavy metals, solids and hydrocarbons are removed.
The sludge phase from the DAF treatment is further treated in decanters to reduce the water content, while returning the water to the biological treatment.
The biological treatment takes place in an active sludge system (“Active Sludge” bioreactor), where dissolved organic compounds, nitrogen and phosphorus are removed from the pre-treated water.
Electric blowers supply air to diffusers in the bioreactor (oxygen to the bacterial culture). The sludge settles in a clearance tank and is recycled back into the system. Excess sludge is removed from the biologically active mass and further handled in a dewatering process.
The purified water is then filtered through a Dynasand Filters, which removes residual particles, before watering Checked and released to sea.
Did you know that:
- Chemical additives in the DAF process remove oil, heavy metals and particles
- The biological treatment takes place using a robust and unique bacterial culture
- SAR's treatment processes meet the national requirements in Norway for discharges to sea
- The treated waste products meet the highest environmental standards
