General waste

General waste comes from public and private businesses and institutions.

Waste forms a large and disparate group containing many different substances and components. The amount of waste is increasing, and as a result, increasingly stringent requirements are being imposed on waste sorting, recycling and efficient final treatment.

Waste can be classified and divided into different categories, either by origin or by type. The Pollution Act divides waste into the following groups:

  • Household waste is waste from private households, including larger items such as furniture etc.
  • Nutrient waste is waste from public and private enterprises and institutions.
  • Hazardous waste is waste that cannot be delivered together with other household or commercial waste due to quantity, or because it may cause significant pollution and/or harm to humans or animals.

The individual owner of commercial waste is responsible for delivering the waste to a legal treatment facility, while municipalities have the responsibility for — and the exclusive right to — handle household waste.

SAR collects, further sorts and prepares nutrient waste for transport to the respective recycling facilities in Norway or abroad. The aim is to ensure that as much of the waste as possible is reused and recycled.

Waste can be a resource if it can be recovered without unreasonable costs. Taking good care of this resource is also an important element in reducing its harmful effects.
