Small batteries from equipment such as mobile phones, PCs, and tools are found in many parts of the business. Improper handling can lead to an increased risk of fire and explosion, which is why robust procedures for safe handling in the workplace are essential.
Did you know that improperly sorted small batteries are one of the most common causes of fires in waste and recycling facilities? Proper handling is therefore an important HSE measure.
Please note:
- Button cell batteries must be sorted separately
- Unsorted small batteries are dangerous goods (ADR)
- The company is responsible for correct handling and declaration
Here's how to do it:
- Remove the batteries from the component and sort them separately.
- Use UN-approved packaging (e.g., clamp-ring drums or steel drums with plastic liners)
- Pack in layers with vermiculite
- Label with declaration number, UN number, and hazard label
Good routines lead to increased safety and compliance with requirements.
