Packaging and shipping

Water-based drilling fluid is delivered in tanks or in bulk by vessel. Load carriers not designed for liquids, such as cuttings skips, must not be used.

Recycling and processing

At the receiving plant, the water and sludge phases are separated. The water phase can be treated at SAR's water treatment plant, while the sludge phase is sent for other treatment.

Requirements and criteria

The requirements described in GOMO (Guidelines for Offshore Marine Operations) must accompany bulk shipments. Skips and other containers with lids must not be used without prior agreement with the waste receiving facility. This type of packaging is not completely leakproof, and transporting liquid waste in it may cause spills, environmental releases and increased handling costs.

Relevant information about the waste (e.g. origin, composition, analytical results, additives and pretreatment) must be included in the declaration.

Further information

Since many components of water-based drilling fluids are not environmentally hazardous, the reason for declaring the waste as hazardous must be stated. Measurements including TOC and salt in the water phase will be carried out on receipt onshore.
