Unsorted small batteries

YES PLEASE

  • Mixture of hazardous and non-hazardous small batteries, mainly alkaline batteries

NO THANKS

  • Electrical and electronic waste
  • Batteries weighing more than 500 g
Classification

Waste code: 7093

Suggested EWC codes: 200133

Hazard class: 9A

Packing group: -

UN no.: 3480 and 3090

Several EWC codes and transport classifications fall within this fraction. Determine the correct classification for your waste using the safety data sheet or contact SAR for advice.

Packaging and shipping

Small unsorted batteries (<500 g) must be sent in UN-approved packaging (e.g. cardboard boxes, plastic containers or open-head drums). Use vermiculite between the layers. If metal drums are used, the waste must also be packed in a transparent plastic inner bag to prevent short circuits.

UN 3090 is stated in the declaration, and the packaging is marked with both UN 3090 and 3480.

Recycling and processing

Batteries are forwarded through battery return schemes. Some battery parts are recycled as material, while the remainder is used for energy recovery.

Requirements and criteria

Sorting batteries by chemistry is recommended.

If a data sheet is available, it must be attached to the declaration.

Further information

Vermiculite is a mineral used as cushioning material when batteries are packaged and shipped. Vermiculite reduces the risk of short circuits and movement in the drum; it also absorbs liquids, conducts heat poorly and is fire-retardant.
