Packaging and shipping

See requirements and criteria.

Recycling and processing

The waste is used for energy recovery.

Requirements and criteria

Infectious waste must be collected and packaged in yellow containers or double yellow plastic sacks. These yellow containers must then be enclosed in an additional layer of packaging, such as a cardboard box. The packaging must be sealed, intact, impact-resistant and leak-proof. The waste must then be strapped to a pallet and covered with shrink wrap.

SAR receives, transloads and sends infectious waste directly for further treatment without opening the sealed packaging. It is very important that the packaging is clearly and visibly labelled to avoid misunderstandings that could lead to it being opened.

A transport document must accompany the consignment and include the sender's name, address, contact person's name/telephone number, date, UN number, hazard class, weight/volume and a description of the waste.

Further information

Infectious waste must not be declared, but must be handled as hazardous waste. Medicine waste (6101) is returned, for example, to a pharmacy.
