Classification

Waste code: 7094

Suggested EWC codes: 160213 (From various types of electrical equipment - industrial) 200133 (Small batteries - portable)

Hazard class: 9A

Packing group: -

UN no.: 3090 (Non-rechargeable)

Several EWC codes and transport classifications fall within this fraction. Determine the correct classification for your waste using the safety data sheet or contact SAR for advice.

Packaging and shipping

Portable lithium batteries: pack in layers with vermiculite in UN-approved packaging.

Industrial batteries: tape the terminals before placing the batteries in layers with vermiculite in a UN-approved cardboard box.

Damaged or swollen batteries: tape the terminals before placing each battery in a separate sealed bag. Place the bag in UN-approved packaging with vermiculite. Mark the packaging “Damaged lithium batteries”.

Batteries weighing more than 30 kg must be packaged with only one battery per outer packaging.

Recycling and processing

Batteries are forwarded through battery return schemes. Plastic and metal parts in lithium batteries are recycled as material, while lithium is sent to landfill.

Requirements and criteria

Batteries must be sorted by type.

Lithium batteries larger than 25 cm must be separated from smaller batteries at source.

Further information

Lithium batteries usually retain considerable energy when discarded and may therefore present a fire hazard. Vermiculite reduces the risk of short circuits and movement in the drum; it also absorbs liquids, has low thermal conductivity and is fire-retardant.
