Classification

Waste code: 7084

Suggested EWC codes: 160602

Hazard class: 8 (Cadmium batteries at risk of leakage) 9 (NiCd batteries/nickel-metal hydride batteries)

Packing group: -

UN no.: 2795 (Cadmium batteries at risk of leakage) 3496 (NiCd batteries/nickel-metal hydride batteries)

Packaging and shipping

Small cadmium batteries must be packed in drums with vermiculite between the layers. This type of battery must be sent in UN-approved packaging (e.g. cardboard boxes, plastic containers or open-head drums). If metal drums are used, the waste must also be packed in a transparent plastic inner bag to prevent short circuits.

Large liquid-filled cadmium batteries must be packed securely on a pallet with a collar and plastic covering on top. Batteries can be stacked up to 3 high, with separators such as cardboard or polystyrene foam between the battery layers. The batteries are protected against moisture with plastic covering on top.

Recycling and processing

Batteries are forwarded through battery return schemes. The battery components are separated. Plastic, nickel and various other metals are recycled as material. Cadmium is landfilled.

Requirements and criteria

Batteries must be sorted by type.

If a data sheet is available, it must be attached to the declaration.
