Packaging and shipping

Electrical and electronic waste is packaged in designated cages or pallets with collars. The cage must be filled up to, but not above, the rim.

For fluorescent tubes, packaging such as boxes or pallets with collars must be used. The light sources must not be individually packaged. Packaging such as cardboard, paper or tape must not be present.

Larger electrical units are stacked on pallets and strapped down.

Recycling and processing

Electrical and electronic waste is sorted into different fractions. Substances harmful to health and the environment are removed and sent for safe final treatment. The remaining components are recycled as material.

Circuit boards are removed and the remainder is handled as hazardous waste.

Requirements and criteria

Light sources containing mercury and batteries are hazardous waste.

Batteries must be removed from electrical and electronic equipment and delivered as hazardous waste. Equipment with integrated lithium or lithium-ion batteries must be transported as dangerous goods under the conditional exemption in special provision 670 (ADR). Transport classification: UN 3091 (non-rechargeable) or UN 3481 (rechargeable)
