Several types of waste contain asbestos; some require transport classification. Determine the correct classification for your waste using the safety data sheet or contact SAR for advice.

Packaging and shipping

Asbestos must be packed in two layers of 160-micrometre plastic. The inner bag should be marked so that the use of two layers is evident. The plastic must be taped to make it completely sealed and secured against leakage. All asbestos-containing waste must be covered by the plastic and sealed. The bags can be sent on pallets with collars. When packing on pallets, the height should preferably not exceed 1 metre.

The waste must be clearly labelled with the text “Contains asbestos. Inhaling dust from this material may cause cancer. Use suitable protective equipment”.

If a data sheet is available, it must be attached to the declaration.

Recycling and processing

Asbestos is landfilled.

Requirements and criteria
Further information

Asbestos is carcinogenic and must be packaged and handled correctly to avoid health hazards. Incorrectly packaged asbestos waste must be repackaged, resulting in increased costs for the waste producer.

Always use suitable protective equipment and approved respiratory protection when handling asbestos.
